Clean back pocket design. Railcar jeans back pockets are sewn on using a single needle sewing not with a automated robotic machine. Each pocket is cut out, hand iron pressed, then its measured and pined on. Finally its sewn with a single needle machine by a human. Every one of our jeans has a hand feel to it.

No back pocket embroidery because pocket embroidery is ugly.

We in the middle of doing a small, I mean really small, production on our womens Viper 002 Japanese brown 12oz 100% cotton jeans. Only 6 pieces per size are being made. New sizes added. Railcar selvedge edge sewing with ultra vintage Union Special

Here are some images we just took here at our Railcar Workshop. This is how we sew our selvedge edge seam on our selvedge style jeans. We use an ultra rare vintage Union Special 1 needle chain stitch machine to do it. The machine is so old, it doesn't have any internal oiling system and has to be oiled manually every time used. All of the moving parts are all on the outside. You can see the thick bead chain stitch on the pocket bag when inside out. Railcar jeans first gets sewn then pressed open to reveal the selvedge edge line when the bottoms are cuffed.

Making Railcar leather patches

At only 3 months the dark top color is showing very nice character of wear. From a raw new state, it is very dark, almost black. Then heathers to a very nice blue with personal fades.

Railcars new Stanwork shirt. Its a light weight chambray work styled shirt that fits very well. Shown on this picture is a meduim. The shirt is made with clean stitching through out. Clean French double stitching seams are present on the side seams and the shoulder seams. This gives a great roping effect when aging the shirt. Also the points of the collar are stitched in with plastic points to keep them from curling out. Another detail is the black buttons and the special Railcar railroad crossing button accent that is on the bottom front. Now available in our online store.

Railcar women's Viper fit on "Kayodic." Slim/skinny mid/low rise 13.5oz red line selvedge edge milled by Cone . The Viper fits true to tag size slim and snug. It will take a few wears for you to break them in to mold to your body. The Viper could also be sized up one size for a little looser fit as shown. Sizing up one will not have any effect on the way the waistband sits on your back as the upper back of the jeans has a lot of shape to prevent gapping. We advise not to size down from your normal size tag as they fit true to size, snug to mold. Please contact us if you need help on sizing.

Railcar rivet reinforcement

For our new denim jeans we use traditional washer riveting. We hand hammer each rivet, after kicking them in place to further reinforce it on. They are hammered on a real piece of 6 inch train track here at the Railcar workshop. The end result, each rivet will have a little bit if denim burr coming out the washer and the head of the nail will be unique to its own from the hammering.

Introducing the womens Railcar selvedge jean. We are very excited about this new product. It is a Cone 13.5oz red line selvedge that is raw and untreated. The denim fabric is 100% cotton, non stretch. The fit is very slim skinny. It includes a chainstitch bottom hem that is very hard to accomplish due to the skinny bottom hopening and selvedge is present in the coin pocket and the fly. Also traditional washer hole riveting and two tone stitching was used.

I'd thought I'd post up some pictures of our Reece button hole machine. This is the machine we use to make the button holes on our flannel shirts and soon to be available chambray work shirts. I used 3 machine heads to make this one working machine. Its mounted on the original Reece table with original foot pedal. This is how we make the garments as original vintage as possible on the vintage manual machines. So its not just the shirt your buying, its the procedure and tooling of making it.

Levi Strauss got his start during the Gold Rush, which may bode well for Steven Dang, an MTA foreman on the Gold Line who recently launched a denim label, Railcar Fine Goods. "[Both occupations are] about attention to detail," says the 31-year-old designer, who sells his limited-run, made in L.A. jeans for up to $200 at American Rag on La Brea and Glory in Los Feliz. Inspired by his day job, Dang's, slim fit line for men, called Spikes, featured denim jeans with an industrial workwear aesthetic boasting cowhide labels and classic hardware rivets. It is real snug and hugs perfect up top down to the mid thigh and then loosen ups to a slim. It will have the same details as the mens jean. Here is a sneak peek at our Railcar pin strip work shirt prototype. Seeing this type of shirt almost everyday at the Metro, we had to make one. And with the name Railcar, how can we not. So here are a few pictures taken from our design studio. Our pin stripe work shirt is made of Japanese fabric with a little bit of stretch to provide maximum comfort. Front and rear upper panel yokes, panel side gussets, single needle pocket emboidery are going to be some of the details you will see on this shirt. Panels will also be clean sewn closed. We use a raw cattle leather patch with a heat brand that is hand made one by one for each pair. We recommend to refrain over machine washing the jean to keep the denim fabric in its raw state and to develop natural fades with high contrast. Union Special Double Lockstitch

This machine is awesome. All the push rods, needle bar, crankshaft is totally exposed.

So I found this little jem. Its an old industrial Union Special Double Lockstitch machine (I believe 1904, pre WW1). I honestly dont know what or where Im going to use this machine on, but I thought Id pick it up since it is the only one out there. Ive searched for information on this machine and this is the only one Ive found. What Ive read was that it was one of the three sewing machines that the US Army approved to use making uniforms. The army wanted a machine that can do a double lockstitch.

The lockstitch is a basic stitch like a normal home sewing machine with a shuttle type bobbin. A double lockstitch looks like a normal single needle stitch on top but the bottom stitch looks kind of like a chain stitch where the top stitch loops back to the previous stitch. My plans for this machine is to try using it on the outseam. dont know if it will work, but Im going to give it a try. It has a fence guide on the machine about 3/8 inch to the needle. My outseam open seam is 1/2 inch where the selvedge shows. I will adjust the pattern smaller a little to use a smaller 3/8 inch open seam. Ill post pictures of the project. But I still need to make a table for it.

At night, Steven Dang can be found on railcard tracks fixing commuter trail cars on the Metro Gold Line, which runs between downtown Los Angeles and Pasadena, California. Mornings, he and girlfriend Tawny Ortiz construct men's fashion label Railcar Fine Goods in a workshop in their home. Without any formal fashion training, these two have scored a coup for those living by a do it yourself creed. They placed their denim and shirting line in high profile Los Angeles boutiques American Rag CIE World Denim Bar and Glory Sales and Service.
For Dang, the leap from light rail mechanic to fashion designer might seem unlikely. How ever, he considers making clothes a close cousin of another one of his big obsessions taking apart and rebuilding cars and motorcycles," I think we're building clothes," Dang said. "Every thread has a function."
The direct link between restoring cars and building clothes can be found in a work shop in his track home, 15 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Dang restores vintage sewing machines such as the Union Special triple needle chain stitch that sits in his workshop. He developed an interest in the machines after visiting apparel factories in 2002 when he was helping friends launch a now defunct contemporary jean line.
He scoured Southern California for parts for vintage sewing machines and used them to take apart jeans and put them back together again. Fast forwarded to January 2010, and debuted Railcar Fine Goods. The look and feel of the denim is inspired by work-wear jeans of the mid 20th century, but the fit and silhouette are contemporary.
The Railcar Fine Goods collection centers around the tapered cut selvedge jean called "Spikes" which is available in eight styles. Railcar also offers plaid shirts called "Moto Flannel" and some Western shirts. Glory manager/buyer Mike Burns said he has reordered the shirts several times because of the high level of detail and craftsmanship. "The patterns are vintage and authentic. He personally oversees the shirts he makes," Burns said of Dang. According to Burns, Glory customers are typically willing to pay $20-$30 extra for a garment if it is made in America which is an added boon for Railcar.
Dang makes samples and trim in his El Monte house. However, for his typical 300 piece production runs, he has them made in factories in Los Angeles. For the near future Dang and Ortiz plan to keep Railcar as a small design house. Their next stop might be opening a small boutique with a design workshop in the back.

I ran into this article that Cone Denim did on their denim selvedge loom. I already use alot of Cone Denim in my current collection. Very sought after American denim from North Carolina used in alot of old collectable vintage denim. Im in the works of making a true mens, mid/high rise, straight leg, zipper fly jean using a 13oz-14oz Cone indigo denim.

Part of the allure of vintage denim is the individuality of each piece. Each garment is a picture in time of the spinner's work, the dyer's eye, the weaver's skill, and the sewer's dedication. Suddenly the variations in the fabric caused by the differences in the cotton and old technology, often considered so undesirable in manufacturing, are the very attributes so revered by denim aficionados and collectors.Vintage denim pieces that have been worn have the added history of the owner. His occupation, how the garment was washed, whether he cuffed the jean or not, and sometimes what he carried in his pockets, all add to the unique "worn in" history of each piece.The lower the technology used and the older the technology, the more variation we find, and the greater the likelihood of finding something of unique beauty. So I'm sucker for a good score. A $20 Columbia Union Special. I came across this guy that is going to lease a spot but there is a bunch of old sewing machines still in there from the previous buisness that the owner passed away. So he was getting rid of everything in there for cheep. Mostly old home machines. But I found and came across this when I was looking around. It was just the machine head only so I asked him, "How much?" He said, "20 bucks." So I took it, cleaned, oiled it and stuck it in my current table.

The Spikes is a mid/low rise jean with a slight tapered fit that has a tapered front panel and a rear panel that is a little bit flared at the bottom to give an illusion of a slimmer jean without feeling like your wearing womens jeans. Triple needle chain stitch foot restoring

This is a very rare hard to find lap seam presser foot. It pivots 3 ways. The only one I could find was modified (picture above). I think the people who had this before me modified it to feed in elastic or ribbon in the stitch or something. So now I want to restore it back to its original glory.

I cut off the metal guide cross that somebody welded on to feed in the elastic or ribbon and filed the guides on the sides down to its original shape. One side is lower then the other so the fabric will feed in a lap seam. I also hit it with a Scotch Brite pad to polish the bottom of the foot.

I just wanted to give a run down how I come up with the names for my collection. I always use a name for my design and or fit. Then I use 3 digit number for the fabric and or wash of the item. As for item numbering, I use my little system to keep track and order of them. For example the mens Trad Western shirt, RCMSTRADWESTS001, means "Railcar, mens, shirt, 'design', 'fabric and or wash.'" If its a womens Trad Western shirt it would be RCWSTRADWEST001.

Just starting the 2010 mens denim sample set. This year Im going to run American and Japanese denim fabric all sewn in the USA. Here is a picture of the pocket bag Im going to use. I've used this on other denim I've made in the past. This pocket lining ages nicely and isn't super white when new. Next, I will do my print on the left side.
